Chinese robot sets Guinness record with 66-mile walk

SHANGHAI: A Chinese humanoid robot has set a Guinness World Record by completing a 106-kilometre (66-mile) walk, the longest distance ever covered by a bipedal machine. The AgiBot A2, standing 169 centimetres tall, traversed highways, city streets, and varied surfaces during its three-day journey from Suzhou to Shanghai.

The walk began on the evening of November 10 in Suzhou and concluded on November 13 at Shanghai’s historic Bund waterfront. According to Guinness World Records, the robot navigated traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists while strictly adhering to traffic regulations, marking a milestone in autonomous robotics. Video footage released by AgiBot shows the silver-and-black A2 marching along roads and city pathways before reaching the Shanghai skyline.

AgiBot, the Shanghai-based company behind the robot, designed the A2 for customer service roles. The humanoid is equipped with a chat function and lip-reading capabilities, enabling it to interact with humans in real-world environments. The company highlighted that the A2’s achievement demonstrates both endurance and navigational intelligence, setting a benchmark for future robots.

The feat comes amid a global surge in interest in physical AI. Analysts from Morgan Stanley predict that more than a billion humanoid robots could exist worldwide by 2050. China, aiming to lead the robotics sector, has actively encouraged domestic companies to innovate in humanoid technology, hosting the first-ever Humanoid Robot Games in August, where over 500 robots competed in sports and practical tasks.

Experts say the A2’s successful long-distance walk underscores the rapid evolution of robotics from controlled laboratory experiments to real-world applications. With advancements in AI, autonomous navigation, and human interaction capabilities, humanoid robots like the AgiBot A2 are poised to play increasingly significant roles in customer service, healthcare, and urban infrastructure worldwide.
