Aminuddin Khan sworn in as FCC’s first Chief Justice

Published on: November 14, 2025 2:21 PM

Justice Aminuddin Khan took oath as the first Chief Justice of the Federal Constitutional Court in Islamabad. President Asif Ali Zardari administered the oath during a ceremony at the President’s House. Top civil and military leaders attended and marked the launch of the new constitutional court.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, COAS Field Marshal Asim Munir, and senior military leaders witnessed the event. Key political figures also joined, including Chief Justice Muhammad Yahya Afridi and Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani. Their presence showed broad institutional support for the new court’s establishment.

The government appointed Justice Aminuddin a day earlier after consultations between the prime minister and the president. The Law Ministry also notified six judges for the court to complete its first bench. The court aims to strengthen constitutional interpretation and resolve key legal questions.

After taking oath, Justice Aminuddin administered the oath to three judges in the first phase. The ceremony took place at the Islamabad High Court in an open courtyard between two main blocks. The remaining judges will complete the bench after taking their oaths.

The appointments followed the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which updated rules for selecting top judicial officers. The amendment confirmed that the most senior eligible chief justice would head either the Supreme Court or the Constitutional Court. It also allowed Justice Aminuddin to continue service beyond his earlier retirement date.
