Zelenskyy requests 25 patriot systems to protect Ukraine

Published on: November 10, 2025 7:27 PM

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has requested 25 Patriot air defense systems from the United States to counter ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks targeting the country’s power grid. The request comes as Ukraine faces rolling blackouts across most regions amid an intensifying aerial assault ahead of winter. Zelenskyy stressed the urgency, noting that European countries could temporarily transfer Patriots to Ukraine while awaiting replacements, as delays could worsen civilian hardships.

Zelenskyy acknowledged that acquiring such a large number of Patriots would be expensive and could take years to manufacture. However, he emphasized that waiting is not an option, given the growing threat to critical infrastructure and the need to protect heating and electricity services for millions of citizens.

Russian strikes on Ukraine’s power infrastructure have become more precise, targeting local switchyards and substations instead of centralized grids. The combined drone and missile attacks coincide with ongoing Ukrainian efforts to halt Russia’s push to capture eastern strongholds, including Pokrovsk, making the situation critical for both civilian life and military operations.

Ukraine has already received Patriot systems from Germany, though the total number currently deployed across the country remains unknown. Analysts note that Ukraine’s air defenses are stretched thin over vast territories, leaving many regions vulnerable to continued Russian strikes. The ongoing threat has prompted emergency measures, including scheduled blackouts to manage limited power supply.

NATO allies continue coordinating deliveries of large weapons packages to Ukraine, with European countries and Canada purchasing equipment from the United States. The Trump administration, in contrast, has refrained from providing arms to Ukraine, differing from previous support under the Biden administration. Such deliveries aim to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and reduce civilian disruptions during winter.

Ukraine’s Energy Ministry urged citizens to conserve electricity, especially during peak morning and evening hours, as Russian attacks have significantly damaged power infrastructure. Authorities warned that prolonged blackouts could affect heating, water supply, and essential services, highlighting the urgent need for reinforced air defense systems like the Patriots.
