An Israeli strike in southern Lebanon killed one person and wounded another on Wednesday, the Lebanese Health Ministry reported. The attack targeted a vehicle in Burj Rahal, and nearby areas, including a road close to a school, were affected, causing panic among students, the state-run National News Agency said.
Israel has not immediately commented on the incident. The strike comes amid warnings from Israel that it plans to intensify attacks on Hezbollah, citing security concerns. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said Hezbollah was “playing with fire,” criticizing Lebanon’s leadership for delayed responses.
Despite a November 2024 ceasefire, Israel has repeatedly conducted airstrikes in Lebanon over the past year. Tensions have risen in recent days as Israel escalates operations against the Iran-backed group. Hezbollah remains weakened from prior conflicts but continues to be a focal point in the region.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has called for renewed negotiations with Israel, emphasizing that the country has yet to clarify its position while continuing attacks. The U.S. has also pressured Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah, highlighting international concern over regional stability.
The latest strike adds to a growing cycle of violence and retaliation in southern Lebanon. Observers warn that continued escalation could further destabilize the region and complicate diplomatic efforts between Israel, Lebanon, and international stakeholders.
