Fresh rift erupts in PTI over central Punjab leadership dispute

LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) finds itself embroiled in yet another internal rift, this time over the leadership of the party’s central Punjab chapter, barely weeks after founder Imran Khan warned leaders against airing disputes in public.

The controversy spilled onto social media platform X, with senior party members trading indirect accusations and contradicting claims about leadership changes.

PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja took to X on Thursday to denounce what he described as conspiracies against him, recalling that Imran Khan had personally assigned him the task of relaying messages from Adiala Jail. The dispute revolves around the removal of PTI Central Punjab President Ahmad Chattha and General Secretary Bilal Ejaz, reportedly on Khan’s instructions, and their replacement with Ali Imtiaz Warraich. However, confusion arose after Mr Raja said no such directive had been issued during his meeting with the party founder.

Adding to the uncertainty, a tweet from Imran Khan’s official account — which he cannot access from prison — denied ordering the removal of Chattha and Ejaz, calling them “long-standing and loyal companions.” Imran’s sister, Uzma Khan, also rejected claims of any leadership reshuffle. Meanwhile, PTI Punjab Chief Organiser Aliya Hamza defended the move, stating she was merely implementing instructions passed down to her, asserting that Imran Khan remained the “final authority.”

The row deepened further as a separate dispute emerged over who holds the authority to submit lists of PTI members visiting Imran Khan in Adiala Jail. Despite a Supreme Court order authorising Salman Akram Raja to send such lists, another list was simultaneously submitted by Barrister Ali Zafar on Oct 29. The conflicting actions have exposed fissures among senior PTI figures, prompting embarrassment within party ranks.

Party insiders described the situation as “party ka mazaaq” (making a mockery of the party), as PTI’s internal divisions continue to unfold in public view. With senior members openly questioning one another’s credibility, observers say the infighting threatens to overshadow the party’s political messaging at a critical time.
