Punjab launches massive drive to enforce minimum wages, worker safety

Published on: October 30, 2025 10:25 PM

The Punjab Labour and Human Resource Department has launched a province-wide campaign to ensure the strict enforcement of minimum wages and the Punjab Occupational Safety and Health Act 2019 across all workplaces. The initiative aims to protect workers’ rights, ensure workplace safety, and promote fair compensation in line with the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and the Labour Minister.

Director Labour Welfare (Lahore South) Nadeem Akhtar said the department’s teams are conducting surprise inspections at factories, workshops, and other workplaces employing manual labour. He emphasized that no employer will be allowed to underpay workers or compromise on safety standards, adding that inspectors have been instructed to take immediate action against violators of labour laws.

According to official data, 1,330 factories have been inspected between January and September 2025 under the ongoing campaign. Out of these, 707 were found compliant with wage and safety regulations, while 623 faced prosecution for violations such as non-payment of minimum wages, lack of protective equipment, and failure to meet safety requirements.

The OSH Act 2019 requires employers to maintain proper ventilation, provide protective gear, ensure emergency preparedness, and keep detailed accident records. It also mandates training programs for workers to raise awareness about occupational safety and preventive measures to reduce workplace risks.

Officials added that the labour department will continue inspections in Lahore and other districts until full compliance is achieved. Alongside enforcement, awareness sessions and collaborations with employers’ associations are also being planned to encourage voluntary compliance and improve workplace conditions across Punjab.

The campaign highlights the Punjab government’s strong commitment to protecting the dignity and welfare of its workforce, ensuring that every worker receives fair pay, safe conditions, and the respect guaranteed under labour laws.
