Pakistan has launched its first National Semiconductor Program, marking a major step toward becoming a regional tech power. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called the initiative “extremely important” and said it would shape the country’s future. He added that “those who control semiconductors and AI will control the world,” stressing the global value of these technologies.
Speaking at the launch of the ‘Inspire Initiative’ in Islamabad, the prime minister said Pakistan is rich in natural resources. However, he noted that it’s now the country’s duty to turn those resources into national strength. The government has already approved Rs. 4.5 billion for the project. The prime minister highlighted several recent digital efforts, including the creation of Pakistan Digital Authority and full digitisation of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). He also cited a successful trial during last year’s Ramadan, where Rs. 16 billion in aid was distributed through a digital wallet. These steps, he said, reflect a new vision of digital governance and youth empowerment.
Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima called the program a “historic milestone.” She said it is not just a tech project but the foundation of Pakistan’s self-reliance in the global digital economy. She stressed the need to train youth in semiconductor and IT fields, despite the global challenge of finding skilled instructors. She noted that the global chip industry is expected to require 1 million skilled workers by 2030 and is projected to reach a market size of $1.3 trillion.
