All eyes on Gill as Indian legends return for ODI clash

Published on: October 18, 2025 4:18 PM

India is set to face Australia in a high-stakes ODI match in Perth on Sunday. The spotlight is on cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as they return to international cricket. This marks their first national appearance since India’s Champions Trophy victory in March. Excitement is building among fans, with Perth Stadium nearing full capacity despite rainy weather predictions.

Leading the team for the first time in an ODI series is Shubman Gill. The 26-year-old batsman said he is honoured to follow in the footsteps of Kohli and Rohit. Gill called it “big shoes to fill” and shared how he admired both players growing up. He emphasized that their hunger for victory and strong communication inspired him. Gill has already captained India in T20 and Test matches but now faces his biggest challenge in the 50-over format.

Gill said he would not hesitate to seek advice from the senior players when needed. He believes teamwork and open communication bring the best out of a squad. Gill wants every player to feel confident in their role. He added that strong leadership comes from trust and unity, not just tactics. His focus remains on building a positive and fearless environment for the team.

Meanwhile, Australian captain Mitch Marsh welcomed the return of India’s top players. He acknowledged that their presence is a major reason for the expected crowd. Marsh even joked that while he respects their talent, he hopes they “don’t play too well” in Australia. His lighthearted comment added to the already buzzing atmosphere around the series opener.
