The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, has decided to recommend a federal ban on an “extremist party” while launching a province-wide crackdown on hate speech, illegal weapons, and lawlessness. The move follows violent clashes between Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) supporters and law enforcers in Muridke and other parts of Punjab during recent protests.
The TLP’s march in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza has turned into violent confrontations with police and Rangers. Major roads linking Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad have been blocked, disrupting transport and daily life. Several TLP workers were reportedly killed, while many police officers were injured in the unrest, prompting emergency measures from the provincial government.

After a high-level meeting chaired by CM Maryam, the government issued a statement announcing strict actions. Without naming the party, it said a formal recommendation will be made to the federal government to impose a ban. The group’s leadership will be placed on the Fourth Schedule under the Anti-Terrorism Act, and its assets transferred to the Auqaf Department. The government also plans to freeze its bank accounts and block social media handles.
The statement said those involved in hate speech, violence, or incitement will be arrested. Individuals responsible for police martyrdom or property destruction will face terrorism charges. The penalty for illegal weapons has been raised to 14 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs2 million. Authorities have been directed to recover all illegal weapons and inspect licensed arms dealers across the province.

Additionally, the Punjab government has approved measures to regulate foreign residents. Afghan citizens will be brought under the tax net, while a large-scale operation will be launched against foreigners residing illegally in the province. The crackdown marks the provincial government’s most extensive effort yet to restore law and order and curb extremist activities.
