Maryam Nawaz approves major Autism school reforms in Punjab

Published on: October 10, 2025 9:36 PM

LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired an important meeting on special education, where she was briefed on the newly established *Maryam Nawaz Autism School for Special Children*. The session marked a historic milestone as the province achieved a record of more than 5,000 admissions of special children in the shortest time. The Chief Minister expressed pride in this achievement and lauded Special Assistant Sania Ashiq and her team for their outstanding efforts in promoting inclusive education.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister approved several key initiatives, including the provision of 48 new buses for special education centers across Punjab. She also decided that underprivileged children would receive free therapy and education at the Autism School. To ensure world-class care and teaching standards, it was decided to hire top autism experts from across the globe. Additionally, uniforms for students, teachers, and staff were approved, along with the formation of a 13-member Board of Governors and a three-year strategic plan for the Autism Resource Center.

Special Assistant Sania Ashiq presented a detailed briefing, explaining that a *customized autism education model*—successfully practiced in leading countries—is being implemented at the school. The curriculum includes communication skills, moral education, life skills, technology, physical education, and sociology, all integrated into a functional green learning approach. Moreover, facilities like a sensory garden, open gym, sound therapy rooms, and a walking track are also part of the school’s development plan to enhance sensory and physical engagement among students.

The Chief Minister was informed that the Maryam Nawaz Autism School and Research Center will admit children aged between 3 and 16, with continued education and therapy support until the age of 22. A hybrid model offering visual and written therapy in both Urdu and English has been introduced to make learning more effective. Furthermore, coaching modules for parents have been designed to strengthen coordination between home and school, ensuring that children receive consistent support in their development journey.

To maintain high standards of safety and professional training, CCTV cameras will be installed across the school premises, and Child Welfare Officers will monitor student well-being. A dedicated *Research and Teacher Training Division* will also be established, offering diploma and certificate programs for educators. This division will train master trainers to equip teachers with modern techniques and ensure sustained improvement in autism education. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz concluded the meeting by commending her team’s vision, reaffirming her government’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and compassionate Punjab.
