Trump, Netanyahu meet at white house over Gaza peace

Published on: September 29, 2025 6:02 PM

US President Donald Trump will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday to push forward a Gaza peace plan aimed at ending the nearly two-year conflict. The talks are expected to focus on securing a ceasefire, freeing hostages held by Hamas, and disarming the militant group, which has been a central challenge for peace efforts in the region.

Trump has expressed optimism about a potential breakthrough following recent discussions with Arab leaders, saying all parties are “on board for something special” and emphasizing that the deal could be finalized for the first time ever. However, Netanyahu has shown limited willingness to compromise, pledging in a recent UN address to continue military operations against Hamas.

The Israeli leader also rejected the idea of allowing the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority a role in governing Gaza under a proposed US-led transitional authority. Netanyahu expressed deep skepticism about the PA’s ability to reform, maintain credibility, or foster coexistence with Israel, signaling a major hurdle in peace negotiations.

Meanwhile, families of Israeli hostages have urged Trump to enforce the proposed ceasefire and ensure that any attempts to derail the deal are blocked. Their open letter highlighted the urgency, noting that families have waited too long for progress and cannot afford setbacks due to political disagreements.

Analysts say the outcome of the White House meeting will depend heavily on how much pressure Trump is willing to apply on Netanyahu. Experts suggest that convincing Israel’s premier to agree to the deal would require a clear strategy, sustained effort, and strong international backing to overcome his preference for continued military action.

The US-led proposal reportedly includes a 21-point plan outlining Hamas disarmament, hostage release, and a ceasefire, possibly involving a transitional Gaza International Authority supported by the UN and Gulf nations. Both leaders are scheduled to address a joint news conference later Monday, providing further details on progress and challenges in implementing the plan.
