Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir met U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday. This was their first official meeting since Trump began his second term in January 2025. The meeting started with a 30-minute delay as Trump was addressing media and signing executive orders. Despite the delay, the atmosphere remained positive. The leaders held talks for nearly 80 minutes in the Oval Office.
Also present were U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The high-level meeting took place behind closed doors. Notably, media was not invited — a rare move for President Trump.
The absence of journalists hinted at sensitive or strategic discussions. Trump welcomed the Pakistani leaders warmly and praised them in brief remarks before the meeting.

During the talks, leaders discussed regional security, trade, and strategic cooperation. Trump emphasized peaceful solutions to Middle East tensions, especially the Iran-Israel conflict. The U.S. showed interest in investing in Pakistan’s mineral and energy sectors.
Recently, American firms committed hundreds of millions of dollars to Pakistan’s mining industry. Talks also covered ongoing U.S. support for oil exploration projects in Pakistan.

Relations between the U.S. and Pakistan are warming under Trump’s new term. Meanwhile, ties between Washington and New Delhi have cooled. The U.S. has imposed tariffs on Indian goods and tightened visa rules.

Trump also claimed he helped broker a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May 2025. These developments suggest a shift in U.S. priorities in South Asia.
The visit marks a diplomatic success for Pakistan’s civilian and military leadership. It comes after Shehbaz Sharif’s active participation at the UN General Assembly. The red carpet welcome at Andrews Air Base added symbolic value to the trip.
Trump’s friendly gestures, including his famous thumbs-up photo, signaled strong bilateral intent. This meeting could open a new chapter in Pakistan-U.S. relations based on mutual interest and trust.
