Punjab CM unveils relief package for flood-hit students

Published on: September 24, 2025 10:16 PM

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved a comprehensive relief package for students in flood-affected areas, aiming to reduce their financial stress and prevent educational disruptions. The initiative covers Muzaffargarh, Multan, Lodhran, Vehari, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Chiniot, and Kasur. By waiving one semester’s fee for enrolled students, the government seeks to ensure that no student is forced to abandon their education due to unexpected hardships caused by devastating floods.

In addition to the semester fee waiver, the government has abolished admission fees for first-year BS students from the affected districts, providing crucial support to families struggling to recover from flood damages. This decision reflects a proactive approach to safeguarding education and empowering youth during challenging times. By reducing financial barriers, the government hopes to encourage higher enrollment and retention rates, particularly among students who might otherwise delay or abandon their studies.

Furthermore, universities in these districts will extend registration deadlines by 20 days to accommodate students who face difficulties meeting academic schedules due to flood-related disruptions. This extension provides students with additional time to prepare and complete their paperwork without unnecessary pressure. The move also demonstrates the administration’s commitment to offering flexibility and understanding in response to the extraordinary challenges facing affected communities.

To further support students, the deadline for Hunarmand Scholarship applications has been extended by one month. This adjustment ensures that deserving candidates from disaster-hit areas will not miss opportunities for financial aid or skill development programs. Extending the timeline allows more students to gather necessary documents and apply for scholarships that can significantly ease their financial burdens.

Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the package is part of broader efforts to rebuild lives and restore normalcy in the wake of the floods. She reassured families that the government is working tirelessly to rehabilitate affected areas and compensate for damages. By prioritizing education within relief measures, the provincial administration underscores its belief that supporting students today will build a stronger, more resilient Punjab tomorrow.
