Talat strikes twice as Pakistan rattles Sri Lanka in must-win clash

Published on: September 23, 2025 9:21 PM

Pakistan won the toss and skipper Salman Ali Agha chose to field first against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup Super Four match. Agha believes the pitch will stay consistent, so he wanted to set the tone early with his bowlers. His decision paid off quickly as Pakistan dismissed Sri Lanka’s openers right after the national anthems. Shaheen Afridi took two early wickets, including Kusal Mendis caught by Talat.

Talat’s bowling has been crucial, claiming two wickets in successive deliveries. He dismissed Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka in the 7th over, putting Sri Lanka under pressure. Sri Lanka struggled to build momentum and were reduced to 92 for six. Pakistan’s bowlers continued to keep the run rate low and the batsmen unsettled. This quick fall of wickets gave Pakistan a major advantage in this must-win game.

Pakistan’s strong bowling display comes at a critical time in the tournament. The Greenshirts must defeat Sri Lanka and then Bangladesh to qualify directly for the final. Additionally, they need India to beat Bangladesh in their remaining match. If Pakistan loses, they will depend heavily on other results, including India’s performance and net run rate calculations.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, are also fighting for their spot in the final. A win against Pakistan would boost their chances, but they too may need favorable results elsewhere. Bangladesh remains a dark horse in the competition after a dramatic recent win. The Super Four stage is tightly contested, and every match could shift the balance.

Overall, Pakistan’s early breakthroughs through Talat and Afridi have set the stage for a tense encounter. Both teams know the stakes are high, and the qualification picture will become clearer after this crucial clash in Abu Dhabi. Fans can expect a fierce contest as the Asia Cup intensifies.
