Why is a working CM a problem? Maryam asks critics

Published on: September 15, 2025 8:30 PM

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed surprise over criticism of her active involvement in flood relief efforts. Speaking at a ceremony in Mianwali, she said people are criticizing her for working, which she finds shocking. She pointed out that this is the first time a CM is being targeted for doing their job. Maryam emphasized that she and her cabinet are working day and night to help flood victims. She also mentioned that ministers have been instructed to stay in the field until relief reaches all affected areas.

She addressed specific criticism about her traveling by boat to inspect flood-hit regions. Critics questioned why a CM was seen in a boat, and some even mocked her actions. Maryam responded by saying that she understands the helplessness behind such comments. She added that if she hadn’t taken action, the same critics would have accused her of ignoring the crisis. According to her, a leader must be present where the people are suffering.

Maryam also highlighted the severe flood damage in Gujrat, calling it one of the worst-hit areas. She announced that the government is installing a new sewerage system in the district. She acknowledged that real work is hard and demands time, planning, and commitment. In contrast, she said, criticism is easy and often done without facts or understanding.

Without naming him, Maryam criticized former Prime Minister Imran Khan for his past response to natural disasters. She recalled that during the 2022 floods, he only did an aerial survey and made light remarks. In contrast, she promised to never beg for help and said she would serve people with dignity, just like her father, Nawaz Sharif. Her statement drew applause from the audience.

In closing, Maryam stressed that when a CM takes the lead, the entire system must respond. She said her presence in the field has pushed others to work harder. She encouraged critics to stop making noise and start contributing to real change. Her message was clear: leadership means action, not optics.
