The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has imposed a hefty fine on Hyderabad Electric Supply Company (HESCO) for causing power outages and financial losses. NEPRA announced the penalty as part of its strict action against electricity companies violating regulations.
According to the NEPRA decision, HESCO will have to pay a daily fine of one lakh rupees starting from April 4, 2024. The fine was imposed due to the company’s load shedding practices that caused significant losses and inconvenience to consumers.
NEPRA took this step after issuing a show-cause notice to HESCO and carefully reviewing the company’s actions. The authority highlighted that the penalty aims to hold HESCO accountable for its failure to manage power supply effectively.
Earlier, on September 12, NEPRA also fined two other government electricity distribution companies a total of more than 250 million rupees for overcharging and causing extra load shedding. This shows the regulator’s ongoing efforts to improve the electricity sector’s performance.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority fined Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) 200 million rupees and ordered it to return the excess amount charged from customers. This action targets unfair billing practices and protects consumers’ rights.
Additionally, NEPRA imposed a daily fine of one lakh rupees on Sukkur Electric Power Company (SEPCO) from April 4, 2024, due to load shedding based on financial losses. The regulator warned all companies to maintain proper power supply and fair billing to avoid penalties.
