Heavy rainfall in Karachi and the overflowing of Thado Dam caused the Malir and Lyari rivers to flood, with water entering residential areas.
After Thado Dam filled to capacity, water released from the spillway further increased the flow, pushing floodwaters into Scheme 33 neighborhoods. The M-9 Motorway near Jamali Bridge was also submerged.
In response, the Karachi commissioner announced the closure of all schools for today. The Sindh government decided to break a dividing wall on the M-9 to divert water and ease pressure.
The Lyari River also overflowed, inundating homes in FB Area, Shafiq Colony, Gulshan-e-Iqbal UC-1, Goharabad, Hasan Naumani Colony, Sohrab Goth, and near Lyari Bakra Piri. Water also entered homes in Nashar Basti and Essa Nagri, trapping residents.
Rescue 1122 reported evacuating 15 children, one elderly man, and four women from Lassi Para. In addition, eight people were rescued from Nashar Basti, while 12 others — including nine children — were moved to safety from Shahbaz Goth.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab described the situation around Malir and Lyari rivers as “challenging.” Visiting Shahbaz Goth, Jamali Bridge, and nearby areas, he told Geo News that both rivers were “flowing like full rivers,” with water release from Thado Dam continuing. He urged citizens to avoid unnecessary movement.
He also denied social media reports about flooding in Saadi Town, calling them false, and confirmed that no water had entered the area.
