US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order renaming the Pentagon from the “Department of Defense” to the “Department of War.” He described the change as a better reflection of today’s world, saying the United States holds the strongest military and must present itself accordingly. Trump made the announcement at the Oval Office, stressing that the new title suits the global environment.
The order immediately allowed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other officials to use new titles such as “Secretary of War” and “Deputy Secretary of War.” Pentagon staff quickly implemented the change. Signs outside Hegseth’s office were replaced, and the department’s official website shifted from defense.gov to war.gov. The updated site prominently features “Department of War” across its pages, signaling a swift rebranding.

Hegseth welcomed the change, calling it more than just a renaming. He argued that the title reflects a shift in purpose, noting the military is not only defensive but also prepared for offensive action. According to him, the new name emphasizes the role of American troops as warriors, not just defenders. He urged federal agencies to adopt the new terminology in all internal and external communications.
The executive order also directs Hegseth to propose further steps, including legislation, to permanently replace the name. While the order acknowledges that congressional approval may be required, Trump downplayed the need for it, saying he was unsure but confident the administration would “figure it out.” Fox News first reported the development, while CNN and other outlets confirmed it.
This marks the first official name change since 1949, when President Harry Truman signed the National Security Act. At that time, the old War Department was merged with the Navy and newly created Air Force into the “National Military Establishment,” later renamed the Department of Defense. The original War Department was founded by George Washington in the 18th century. Hegseth, known for restoring traditional military names, has previously reversed Biden-era changes and ordered renaming of ships and bases, including one once named after gay rights activist Harvey Milk.
