Israeli warplanes launched heavy airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, targeting several locations. The Israeli military claimed that Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed Ghalib Al-Rahawi was killed in the attack. According to Iran’s semi-official Mehr News, an Emirati website reported that Al-Rahawi died on Thursday after a missile hit an apartment in the Beit Bus area of Sanaa.
Al-Rahawi had been serving as the prime minister of the Houthi-led government for about a year, primarily handling administrative duties.
The Yemeni opposition channel Al-Jumhuriya and Aden-based newspaper Aden Al-Ghad also reported his death, stating that he was killed along with close associates. Israeli media outlets echoed these claims based on Emirati-backed sources. The airstrike occurred amid Israel’s announcement that it targeted senior Houthi military commanders in Sanaa, intensifying the ongoing conflict in the region.
However, a Houthi official denied Israeli claims that military leaders, including the defense minister and chief of staff, were hit in the strikes. Israeli forces stated they attacked a military target on Thursday but did not immediately confirm any casualties. Yemeni official Nasruddin Amir dismissed reports about the killing of military leaders during the attacks.
The situation remains highly tense as Israel and the Houthi movement continue to exchange fire. The recent escalation raises concerns about further violence in Yemen’s already fragile security environment.
