Why democracy is panacea for all ills

Published on: August 20, 2025 5:23 AM

If we go through the annals of history, it becomes crystal clear that a number of government systems were introduced to govern the masses and provide them with necessary paraphernalia in a bid to lead a life in peace and serenity. With the passage of time, most of them evanesced as they lacked the requisite strength to keep the system intact and come up to the desires of the people. Intellectuals and political philosophers expended their best efforts to devise a government system that could ensure the prompt service delivery at one hand and develop civic sense of responsibility among the people on the other hand.

The ordeal came to an end with the signing of Magna Carta by the British Monarch in 1215. It paved the way for parliamentary democracy which was sooner or later replicated by most nations of the world. Limited Monarchy survived under constitutional cover in some countries by the end of 20th century. Western nations became trailblazers in championing the democratic values and giving people their say in running the state affairs through electing their own representatives after stipulated time intervals.

Now, before discussing the blessings of democracy, ingredients of this most cherished form of government essentially be elaborated at the first instance. Democracy derives its legitimacy and strength from the people’s will. If masses are well aware of the schemes being undertaken by the rulers to ensure good governance, they may express their consent through voting for those particular candidates in the elections and give them another chance to continue their policies. This inevitable aspect of democracy can only be achieved when a nation displays good literacy rate figures on the board. Countries which are trailing behind in the field of education, still have inchoate democratic setups and crippling institutions; unable to palliate the sufferings of people.

Since the justice meted out tardily is tantamount to justice denied, hence active and independent judiciary serves as a lynchpin in a democratic system that is meant for ensuring service delivery at doorstep. Efficacious judicial system makes people feel safe and snug. It also acts as a bulwark against the nefarious designs of dictators and democracy thrives when it speaks through its judgements in favor of people’ desired government system.

Free media is second to none in its efficacy of propagating a particular agenda. Media moguls play a vital role in shaping public opinion. They debate on screens, the blessings and bane of prevailing government system. This practice being repeated on daily basis make the people feel that the veracity of those views is unimpugnable. In the recent times. social media tops the chart when it comes to swift dissemination of information from one part of the world to another. Media can be used to fend off the onslaughts on democratic values and promote the true essence of this system.

Among all the ingredients, transparent electoral system can be attributed as a prerequisite for making democracy the most valuable scheme when multiple systems are vying for legitimacy in the current era. In a number of countries, albeit, rulers masquerade themselves as democratically elected representatives of the people, but in fact they made through the defected elections. They leave people with no other option except to elect them. The body responsible for conducting elections serve as concubine to the rulers and declare results as per their will. The government that comes into being through such rigged electioneering process, cannot be termed a true scheme for ruling. Empowered and influence free elections conducting body is pivotal in making democratic system a success story.

Now coming towards the main theme of our topic, it can rightly be said that democracy is panacea for all ills as it is the system which bestows the people with the primary right to elect their own rulers who run statecraft in line with their desires. Political parties are operational in almost all democracies of the world and politicians are well aware of the fact that they have to go to the people after the expiry of each term and if they fail to assuage the miseries being faced by the public, they must have to face people’s wrath. Hence, elected representatives make all out efforts to implement such schemes which are not only beneficial to the masses, but also entice media attention; necessary for election campaign.

In a democratic system, political parties keep on inducting new blood in the form of office-bearers of different types. These people represent new generation and raise their voice for provision of modern day facilities for the youth of the nation. Young ones are provided with multiple facilities to exhibit their skills. Playgrounds are there to ensure healthy engagements. Government tries its level best to hone the skills of people and utilize their strengths in a constructive way.

To cut the clutter, democracy is a system in which government aims to ensure the provision of basic as well as civic facilities to the people with a view to build a healthy nation. Such a nation is always destined to achieve the desired goals successfully. In a democratic scheme of actions, people keep check on the rulers and those who are responsible for policy making, hammer out plans for wellbeing and prosperity of the said nation.
