Karachi – Intense monsoon rain continued to lash Karachi on Tuesday, flooding low-lying areas and prompting warnings of urban flooding in the next 48 hours. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has declared the next two days critical for the city’s weather situation.
Rain began in the early hours and continued intermittently throughout the day. Many areas, including Landhi, Malir, and Quaidabad, saw rainwater entering homes. Major roads like Shahrah-e-Faisal, I.I. Chundrigar Road, and MR Kiyani Road resembled lakes, causing severe traffic disruption.
According to weather analyst Jawaad Memon, more clouds are forming over the city, and additional rainfall is expected. PMD noted that a depression near Odisha, India, is likely to move toward Gujarat in the next 24–36 hours, which will impact Sindh, including Karachi, until August 23.
Experts warn that moderate to heavy downpours could cause urban flooding in Karachi due to the ongoing monsoon system over the Arabian Sea. Citizens are advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid using phones except in emergencies, and keep away from poles, fences, and trees.
Meanwhile, incomplete road works have worsened the situation. In Liaquatabad, open sewage trenches have filled with rainwater, trapping vehicles. In North Nazimabad, a section of the road near Landi Kotal Chowrangi collapsed, severely affecting traffic flow.
In response, Sindh Chief Secretary Asif Hyder Shah has directed all district administrations to stay on high alert. He instructed deputy commissioners to remain in the field, ensure water drainage, and coordinate with K-Electric, HESCO, and SEPCO for uninterrupted electricity supply. The administration was also told to stay in touch with PMD and PDMA for continuous updates.
