PAA denies rumours of week-long Islamabad airport closure

Published on: August 10, 2025 12:04 PM

The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has rejected rumours claiming Islamabad International Airport will close for eight days, calling such reports false and misleading for the travelling public. Officials clarified that flight operations will only pause for short intervals on selected days, allowing Pakistan Air Force (PAF) jets to rehearse for the upcoming Independence Day flypast. These brief suspensions aim to ensure smooth coordination and air traffic safety while minimising disruption for passengers and airlines.

According to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the authority, civilian arrivals and departures will be suspended daily from 11:00am to 1:00pm on August 6–9 and August 11–14. Additionally, there will be evening closures from 8:00pm to 10:00pm on August 11–13. During these windows, fighter jets will use the capital’s airspace for practice flights, preventing civilian aircraft from landing or taking off at Islamabad International Airport.

The PAA stressed that outside the announced time slots, all flights will operate as per schedule without any extended interruptions. Officials reassured travellers that the measures were temporary and part of standard preparations for the annual Independence Day celebrations. By keeping rehearsals limited to specific hours, the authority aims to balance security requirements with passenger convenience and operational efficiency.

Furthermore, the NOTAM advised airlines, pilots, and flight crews to exercise extra caution while operating during rehearsal days, ensuring safety for both military and civilian air traffic. The rehearsal periods are coordinated with multiple agencies to maintain strict adherence to safety protocols and minimise unnecessary delays for travellers. This collaboration also ensures that the celebrations can proceed without compromising regular aviation services.

Passengers have been advised to check with their airlines before heading to the airport to avoid any inconvenience during the rehearsal periods. The PAA emphasised that proactive planning and timely updates will help travellers adjust their schedules and prevent last-minute surprises. Officials also encouraged passengers to arrive earlier than usual if their flights are close to the closure timings.
