Punjab, Railways launch 40km green corridor in Lahore

Published on: August 2, 2025 1:49 PM

The Punjab government and Pakistan Railways have started a major Green Corridor Project in Lahore. The project will cover 40 kilometers of railway track between Shahdara and Raiwind. It will create green belts along the track to reduce pollution and improve the city’s look. This initiative will use 700 kanals of land next to the railway line.

The project is worth over Rs2.25 billion and should finish within one year. Officials have divided it into four parts: Shahdara to Railway Station, Walton, Walton to Kot Lakhpat, and Raiwind. This plan will bring fresh green spaces to crowded urban areas. It also aims to support cleaner air and a healthier environment for residents.

As part of the project, old railway carriages will get a new life. They will be changed into libraries and cafes. This will add fun and useful spots along the green corridor. These changes will help turn the area into a place where people can relax, read, and socialize.

The Housing Department of Punjab has sent the project’s PC-1 document for official approval. This is an important step to move the project forward. Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi thanked Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz for her support. He said her cooperation helped push the project ahead quickly.

Overall, the Green Corridor Project is a big step toward a cleaner Lahore. It will reduce pollution and make the city greener. The project also aims to boost community life with new libraries and cafes. With strong government support, it hopes to finish on time and benefit many people.
