The United Arab Emirates has started work on a major water pipeline to supply desalinated water to southern Gaza. UAE technical teams have begun transporting essential equipment for the project, according to the Emirati state news agency WAM. The nearly seven-kilometre pipeline aims to ease the severe water shortage affecting the Gaza Strip.
COGAT, Israel’s civil affairs body for Palestinian territories, confirmed that pipeline construction will start soon and should take a few weeks to complete. The pipeline will connect a desalination plant in Egypt to the Al-Mawasi area along Gaza’s coast. It is expected to provide clean water daily to about 600,000 residents.
WAM also reported that the UAE has initiated several programs to drill new wells and rehabilitate existing potable water sources in Gaza. These efforts complement the pipeline project and aim to improve the overall water situation in the region.
This project highlights the UAE’s growing role in humanitarian efforts in the Palestinian territories. By providing access to clean water, the pipeline will address a critical need and improve living conditions for many Gazans.
Meanwhile, Lahore-based exporter Faizan Majeed praised the UAE for its strategic trade access. He noted that Pakistani exporters can benefit from Dubai’s ports and free zones if business-friendly policies and less bureaucracy are introduced at home.
