PDMA warns: Flood threat looms over Punjab cities

Published on: July 30, 2025 12:34 PM

LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued a new weather alert as heavy monsoon rains are expected to continue across the province over the next 24 hours. The PDMA has warned that urban flooding is likely in several major cities, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Gujranwala.

According to the alert, heavy rainfall is forecast in the districts of Lahore, Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Sialkot, where intense showers may cause water accumulation on roads and disrupt daily life. The PDMA noted that this monsoon system may persist until July 31, increasing the risk of both urban and riverine flooding.

The PDMA has directed local authorities to remain on high alert, ensure proper drainage, and activate emergency response teams. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors during heavy rain, and keep track of official weather updates.

PDMA Director General Imran Qureshi stated that rivers Chenab, Jhelum, and Ravi, along with their linked streams and tributaries, may see dangerous water level increases. In particular, Ganda Singh Wala on the Sutlej River is expected to experience a surge in water flow. Flash flood risks remain high in hilly and low-lying areas.

In Narowal, a low-level flood has been recorded in Nala Baeen, with water levels being monitored closely. While the current situation remains under control, authorities are prepared for any emergency. PDMA has also asked the public to report any blocked drains, landslides, or flood signs to helplines immediately.
