Residents of Karachi’s Kemari and West districts, who have long suffered from severe water shortages, are likely to get relief as the new Hub Canal becomes operational on August 14. This development is expected to ease the city’s water crisis and improve daily supply to these water-starved areas.
According to Dawn newspaper, the new canal is a major project by the provincial government aimed at strengthening Karachi’s water infrastructure. It will provide an additional 100 million gallons per day (MGD), while the old Hub Canal, currently supplying 150 MGD, is also being repaired alongside the new construction.
Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced on platform ‘X’ that the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation is fully prepared to launch the new canal on Independence Day. He shared that the project, costing Rs12.8 billion, has been completed in a record time of just nine months with financial support from the Sindh government.
Moreover, the existing Hub Canal is also being upgraded as part of the same plan. The water board spokesperson confirmed that the new canal will greatly improve the city’s water supply system, especially for the most affected areas of Kemari and West districts.
The project, approved back in 2022, includes both the construction of a new canal and the rehabilitation of the old one. This dual strategy aims to ensure a stable and improved water flow to underserved districts of the city.
Additionally, the project includes upgrading the Hub Pumping Station, rising mains, and the Hub Filter Plant to increase their capacity from 80 MGD to 100 MGD. Officials believe this initiative is a major step toward resolving Karachi’s long-standing water issues and bringing visible relief to its citizens.
