High-level flood risk at Chashma on the Indus river

Published on: July 19, 2025 1:12 PM

The Director General of PDMA has issued a serious warning about a high-level flood risk at Chashma on the Indus River. Currently, low-level floods are reported at Tarbela and Kalabagh, while Chashma faces a medium-level flood. However, the situation at Chashma could worsen with water levels rising further. Authorities are on high alert and continuously monitoring the river’s flow.

In addition to the flood risk at Chashma, the DG PDMA has alerted the public about increasing water flows expected in the Ravi, Jhelum, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers starting from July 21. These rivers are likely to experience stronger currents and higher water volumes in the coming days. Local administrations have been advised to prepare for possible flooding.

The rise in water levels is mainly due to heavy rains in the upper catchment areas of these rivers. The DG mentioned that rainfall intensity has increased in those regions, which could lead to sudden surges downstream. This situation increases the chances of flash floods and requires urgent attention.

Officials have urged residents living near these rivers to stay vigilant and follow safety instructions. They also emphasized the importance of evacuation plans and flood preparedness to avoid casualties and property damage. The PDMA is coordinating with local authorities to ensure a timely response if floods worsen.

Overall, the PDMA’s warnings highlight the urgent need for awareness and readiness as Pakistan faces possible severe flooding in multiple river basins. Authorities continue to monitor weather patterns and water levels to protect lives and property from potential flood disasters.
