LAHORE: Pakistan Railways has taken a significant step toward modernization by deciding to privatize 11 passenger trains. This initiative aims to enhance travel comfort, improve service quality, and boost revenue generation, said a spokesperson for Pakistan Railways on Tuesday.
Among the trains selected for privatization are some of the most frequently used and important routes, including Hazara Express, Bahawalpur Zakaria Express, Millat Express, Rawal Express, Badar Express, Ghori Express, Ravi Express, Thal Express, Faiz Ahmed Faiz Express, and the Mohenjo Daro Passenger train.
The privatization plan is part of broader reforms to address operational inefficiencies and financial losses in the state-owned rail system. Officials believe that bringing private companies on board will introduce better management practices, upgrade onboard amenities, and improve punctuality and safety.
The spokesperson explained that recent fare increases were necessary to meet rising operational costs, and the move toward privatization will help sustain and expand rail services in the long term.
In addition to providing enhanced facilities such as cleaner coaches, improved catering, and digital ticketing systems, private operators are expected to invest in infrastructure maintenance and staff training.
This shift is also expected to create competitive pressure that can lead to overall improvements across Pakistan’s rail network, benefiting millions of passengers who rely on trains daily for commuting and long-distance travel.
Pakistan Railways has invited bids from private firms and plans to implement the privatization gradually to ensure smooth transitions and minimal disruption to passengers.
