The number of Pakistani nationals seeking asylum in European countries has dropped in 2024 after reaching record levels in 2023, according to the latest EU asylum trends report. After a sharp rise since 2020, applications peaked last year with over 30,000 Pakistanis requesting international protection.
Between October 2023 and October 2024, around 28,000 Pakistanis submitted asylum requests—a clear decline from the previous year. Monthly applications fell from 3,400 in 2023 to just 1,900 by October 2024, indicating a significant shift in migration patterns.
Italy remained the top choice for Pakistani asylum seekers, followed closely by France, Greece, and Germany. These countries have consistently seen higher application numbers due to existing migrant communities, easier entry routes, and perceived economic opportunities.
Despite the high number of applicants, success rates remained low. Out of 20,000 processed cases during the 12-month period, only 12% were granted refugee status. The remaining applications faced rejection or continued delays in decision-making.
Moreover, the report revealed that 34,000 asylum cases from Pakistan remain pending across Europe. This growing backlog, along with stricter immigration policies, suggests that the path to protection is becoming harder for many Pakistanis seeking safety and stability abroad.
The report reflects both a slowdown in new arrivals and a tougher stance on asylum approvals. As European nations tighten their policies, Pakistani migrants may face increasing challenges in securing refugee status in the years ahead.
