Karachi hit by heavy rain, over 300 power feeders trip causing widespread outages

Published on: June 27, 2025 2:00 PM

KARACHI – A heavy spell of rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, lashed various parts of Karachi on Friday, plunging large areas of the city into darkness and creating serious disruptions. The sudden downpour led to more than 300 power feeders tripping, severely affecting the electricity supply in multiple neighborhoods.

Rainfall was reported in areas including Gulshan-e-Maymar, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Malir, Steel Town, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, and Super Highway. Other regions such as North Karachi, Surjani, Azizabad, Tariq Road, Saadi Town, Malir Cantt, and University Road also experienced significant showers. Additionally, localities like Safora Chowrangi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Defence, Clifton, and Kala Pul were impacted by the storm.

As the rain intensified, waterlogging became a major issue across several residential zones. Streets and service roads in low-lying areas quickly filled with rainwater, adding to the residents’ woes. The accumulated water not only hampered movement but also led to traffic disruptions on key routes throughout the city.

Simultaneously, the tripping of over 300 K-Electric feeders led to large-scale power outages in districts such as North Nazimabad, Moosa Colony, Shadman, Federal B Area, and Liaquatabad. The blackout created significant inconvenience for residents, many of whom were preparing for work or school when the electricity failed.

Moreover, the rain-related chaos resulted in multiple cases of electric shocks. Rescue teams reported that several individuals were injured after coming into contact with live wires exposed by the flooding. Officials have urged citizens to stay indoors and avoid touching electrical equipment in wet areas.

In response, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab took immediate action, visiting the most affected parts of the city. He ordered the cancellation of all municipal staff leave and directed teams to remain on high alert. The mayor emphasized the need for prompt drainage work and restoration of essential services to reduce public distress.

Authorities have also warned that more rain may follow in the coming days, urging residents to take precautions and report emergencies immediately. The situation has once again raised concerns about the city’s drainage and power infrastructure, which remain vulnerable to seasonal weather conditions.
