The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a severe heatwave alert expected to impact most parts of the country during the upcoming Eid ul Adha holidays. A strong high-pressure system is predicted to form over Pakistan starting June 7, causing temperatures to rise sharply from June 8 onwards.
According to PMD, daytime temperatures could soar 5 to 7 degrees Celsius above normal in areas like Islamabad, central and upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Meanwhile, the southern regions—including upper Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan—may see temperatures 4 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal during the same period.
Additionally, excessive heat may lead to dust storms and gusty winds across the plains. The public, especially children, the elderly, and women, are strongly advised to avoid direct sun exposure and stay hydrated throughout the heatwave. The PMD has warned of increased risks of heat-related illnesses during this time.
Moreover, the rising temperatures in northern areas could speed up snowmelt, potentially impacting river water levels. Authorities have urged citizens to use water carefully and asked farmers to plan their activities based on the latest weather forecast.
In response, all relevant departments have been placed on high alert and directed to take necessary safety measures. The PMD emphasized the importance of staying updated with official weather advisories to ensure public safety during this extreme weather event.
As temperatures continue to climb, experts recommend minimizing outdoor activity during peak heat hours, wearing light clothing, and taking all precautions to avoid heatstroke and dehydration.
