Sir: Journalism in Pakistan is the most dangerous profession. Those who opt for this profession, they actually adopt it at their own risk because there are numerous example when government failed to protect journalists. Though, the representatives of mainstream political parties have vowed that a draft of bill would be prepared and get passed in the Parliament to provide complete protection and security to journalists and their families but they have not implemented anything yet. On March 19, 2014, Prime Minister “Nawaz Sharif addressed that, “I Want to make Pakistan a journalist friendly country where not only national but international media community should feel secure and respected.” But maybe he forgot to do efforts on his statement to make it possible. Recently, police arrested renowned journalist Iqrar-ur-Hasan on exposing the security loophole at Sindh Assembly. He was actually doing a sting operation as he really wanted to tell the members of assembly that they were secure in Parliament, but members started chanting the slogan that he was the culprit. They requested the Speaker of assembly to issue orders for his arrest instead of listening to his point of view. My question is that if he let you people know about his sting operation before, would it still be called sting operation? He was handcuffed because he was showing reality to the people of Pakistan, and I think this is what journalists are supposed to do. Though, he has been released from jail but it was such a shameful act. Instead of rewarding him, they sent him to the prison. I strongly condemn this awful act and request the government of Pakistan to pass a Journalist Safety Bill in the assembly and try to give security to all journalists in Pakistan. HAREEM FATIMA Karachi
