PESHAWAR: The provincial government has issued Rs150 million for the reconstruction and renovation of Galiyat and withdrawn the Rs.30 entry fee on tourists in order to boost tourism in the scenic valley. The Gallyat Development Authority’s (GDA) counsel, Asghar Khan, revealed these details while arguing before a division bench of the Peshawar High Court on Friday. The bench comprising Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Syed Afsar Shah was hearing a case with regard to development of Galiyat. The GDA counsel said that besides reconstruction of roads and passageways, steps aimed at keeping the scenic valley clean and green have also been launched in collaboration with the World Wide Fund (WWF). He said that tourists would be provided with biodegradable bags as they were environment-friendly. The counsel also produced a comprehensive report before the bench and stated that a new master plan for development of Galiyat has been prepared and contract awarded to a firm. He said that all environmental aspects were taken care of and efforts were being made to preserve the natural beauty of the area. “Modern facilities would be provided to attract tourists from across the country as well as international tourists,” he argued. The GDA lawyer said that a computerised database of all plots and allotments was being prepared to facilitate locals. He also told the bench that GDA has its own website where people could register their complaints and offer suggestions to improve and develop Galiyat. A monitoring cell consisting of 14 officers of GDA has been set up to monitor development activities and address the complaints of tourists and locals alike. Asghar Khan stated that WWF has been engaged in improving the sewerage system waste disposal across Galiyat. A letter had been sent to the Local Government Department to constitute a committee to manage the development affairs of Galiyat. The bench remarked that it would review the report and respond in due course.
