ISLAMABAD: The future of parliamentary committee tasked to draft consensus terms of reference (ToRs) to investigate the revelations made by Panama Papers is at stake, as no progress was made even at the seventh meeting of the 12-member panel that met here on Friday. The opposition members of the committee were of the view that the government side was in fact ‘save Sharif’s family committee’, whereas the government members believed that the ToRs of the opposition start from the prime minister and end at him. After the meeting, Aitzaz Ahsan told reporters that the deadlock prevailed right from the day one. The session was actually a perfect tale of ‘meeting, eating and cheating’, he said. Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the government does not want accountability of prime minister and his family due to which the matter was being prolonged. “I am disappointed and I think that further sessions will be nothing but wastage of time. I don’t see any future of the committee,” he added. PML-Q leader Tariq Bashir Cheema said that there was no use attending ToRs committee meetings in future. However, Ilyas Bilour of ANP said that he will attend the next meeting scheduled for June 14 even if nobody else turns up. Mir Hasil Bazinjo said that the opposition comes to the meeting with the mindset of not moving forward on the matter. Kh Saad Rafiq said the mandate of the committee was to draft the ToRs only and that it was up to the court to call anyone or leave him. Our special correspondent adds: PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi suggested other opposition members to part their ways over non-serious attitude of the government. “The situation has gone from bad to worse. I have come to conclusion that there is no use of being part of the committee anymore,” he said. Sources said the ANP and MQM were not siding with the strategy of the rest of the opposition parties. Even PPP was not throwing its full weight behind the PTI, the sources said, and added the committee may face collapse in the near future.
