ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has informed the Supreme Court that the electoral record of 24 polling stations has been found while that of five polling stations was still missing in NA-110, Sialkot, wherein Defence Minister Khawaja Asif got victory in last general elections. ECP Secretary Babar Yaqoob Fateh on Saturday submitted a report in the apex court. The court is hearing PTI candidate Usman Dar’s appeal against rejection of his petition by an election tribunal. Babar, in his reply, stated that in compliance of the apex court directions, the returning officer and district accounts officer were directed to search the missing polling bags and also search the counterfoils in the polling bags of the corresponding polling stations of provincial assembly constituencies falling in NA-110. The report said bags of polling stations 81, 101, 118, 121 and 218 are not available in the record. The record of those polling stations found include 12, 21, 22, 38, 47, 54, 68, 73, 76, 84, 107, 116, 124, 132, 134, 138, 150, 170, 186, 202, 203, 215, 216 and 217, according to the report. The returning officer transmitted the counterfoils retrieved from corresponding polling bags of the provincial assembly constituency to NADRA. However, he has reported now that the counterfoils of NA-110 Sialkot with respect to polling station No 132 were missing and out of five missing polling bags, counterfoils of polling station No118 and 121 are still missing. “After the consolidation of result, the sealed polling bags in respect of polling stations containing used and unused ballot papers and counterfoils are deposited in the respective treasury of the district account officer.” The report says that DAO has admittedly received 227 sealed poling bags (white color) in respect of NA-110 from the returning officer as would appear from inventory. “The responsibility of missing bags squarely lies on the concerned DAO/TO. The DAO is custodian of election material on behalf of the ECP. The matter was placed before the chief election commissioner for appropriate order, who has been inquiry against DAO and all other responsible for the missing record.” Meanwhile, the ECP while submitting a separate application has sought guidance from the top court regarding holding of local government elections of mayor, deputy mayor, chairman and deputy chairman in Sindh and Punjab due to the retirement of the four members of the election Commission of Pakistan.
