A group of bipartisan US lawmakers urged Walt Disney Co CEO Bob Chapek to explain the company’s connection with “security and propaganda” authorities of China’s Xinjiang region during the production of live-action war epic “Mulan”. Disney’s $200 million live-action remake of its animated classic about a female warrior in ancient China has run into controversy for being partly filmed in the Xinjiang region, where China’s clampdown on ethnic Uighurs and other Muslims has been criticized by some governments, including the United States, and human rights groups. “Disney’s apparent cooperation with officials of the People’s Republic of China who are most responsible for committing atrocities – or for covering up those crimes – is profoundly disturbing,” the Republican senators and representatives wrote in Friday’s letter. It urged Disney to make a detailed explanation.
