PESHAWAR: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Siraj-ul-Haq said on Tuesday that his party would file a petition in the Supreme Court on August 22 seeking court orders for an investigation into the Panama leaks and waiver of loans. Speaking at a press conference, Haq said he never said that only Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should be held accountable for the revelations made by the Panama Papers. He said, “All those who got loans amounting to millions of rupees written off and those who owned offshore companies should be investigated. Those found guilty of corruption should be punished.” Haq said the JI wanted across-the-board accountability of all politicians having offshore companies and those who got their loans written off. He said the government was not showing any kind of seriousness in investigation into the Panama leaks and offshore companies. “They have left us with no option, but to move the Supreme Court,” the JI chief said. He said the Panama Papers linked the prime minister and his family to offshore companies; therefore, the government was delaying the investigation into the leaks. Keeping in view the toothless Pakistan Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1956, he said, the court ordered an effective legislation and it should not fall on government’s deaf ears. “Politicians and all those who got their loans worth billions of rupees written off should be arrested and the looted money should be recovered from them,” Haq said. He said that politicians looted Rs 200 trillion and deposited this amount in Swiss banks. If brought back, he said, it would change the fate of every Pakistani and enable Pakistan to retire all its debt. He said that nothing could stop Pakistan’s progress once this fatal disease of corruption is treated. He said the Panama leaks case should be heard in an open court so that people know the deeds of those they voted for. Haq, who is also a member of the Senate of Pakistan, said that those who got their loans waived would be held accountable and the JI would go to any extent to get them punished. He said the JI had an untainted record; therefore, it should lead the accountability movement and take it to a logical end. He called for an end to the VIP culture to ensure equality and brotherhood and do away with the sense of deprivation among the downtrodden segments of the society. He urged people to join JI’s movement against corruption. Responding to a question about Afghan refugees, the JI chief said that those harassing them were not well-wishers of Pakistan. He said that Afghan refugees should be given respect.
