KARACHI: Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB), in an attempt to overcome its financial crisis which is up to Rs. 5 million per month, has suspended free water tanker service on Tuesday terming it a great liability. The free tanker service has been stopped to all organizations and well-off people with immediate effect, it said. “It would not only reduce the Rs. 5 million rupees burden upon KWSB but also improve the recovery,” Misbah Uddin Farid Managing Director (MD) KWSB. The decision was taken at a meeting of KWSB officials with the associations of Hydrants and Tankers here on Tuesday. According to MD KWSB, although water was being provided to important public buildings such as Supreme Court of Pakistan (Karachi Registry), Sindh High Court (SHC), Governor Sindh House, Chief House, Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) on official rates but there were some politicians, bureaucrats and technocrats who were getting free tanker service. However he refused to mention names. “High echelon of society can afford big houses, vehicles, pay utility bills but when it comes to drinking water, they try to get it for free,” Misbah said. He added that due to the abundance and free supply of water, this precious commodity is being wasted by the users. Interestingly, KWSB says it would continue to provide water to all those organizations and individuals who have the muscle, on concession rates. However, MD KWSB made it clear that free tanker service through Sindh Chief Minister Program for poor people would continue.
