Sir: We Pakistanis want to live and die and be buried. Patriotism and loyalty to Pakistan is an article of faith, just like their religion, and they would willingly offer supreme sacrifice for either. Quaid-e-Azam MA Jinnah promised us self-government in a modern democratic welfare state, where people would be masters of their destiny. Unfortunately his advice was not adhered to and we have seen Pakistan dismembered in 1971, its sovereignty compromised by Zia blinded by his desire to fight America’s proxy war in Afghanistan and this country suffers from curse of extremism, sectarianism, ethnic divide and terrorism. The political process was disrupted and instead of politicians rising through political struggle, they were implanted by vested interests. Mistakes have been made by all. I have witnessed military action in East We suffered consequences of our involvement in Afghan war, because we refused to learn from our mistakes. ZAB made the grave mistake of ordering military action in Balochistan and this was followed by another brutal action by Musharraf junta which led to killing of Nawab Bugti. We must let sanity and sense prevail. When citizens are aggrieved, matters must be resolved politically and not through force. MALIK TARIQ Lahore
