Rs 1.5 billion River Sawan land illegally sold as plots

Published on: January 6, 2017 5:32 AM

ISLAMABAD: A new pandora’s box has opened after the registration of an FIR against General Secretary Yasir Mehdi and Accountant Mansoor Sarwar of Civilian Employees Cooperative Housing Society (Sawan Garden), involving embezzlement of Rs 1.50 billion.

Both the President Ansar Gondal and General Secretary Yasir Arfat Mehdi, of the housing society have allegedly sold the land of River Sawan by converting it into plots and have put entire amount in their own pockets.

They also reportedly gave precious gifts and expensive plots to officials of CDA and Circle Registrar’s Office to keep mum on the affair.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has started recording the statements of the employees of the housing society.

Just after taking the oath of their slots, President Ansar Gondal and General Secretary Yasir Mehdi allegedly sold almost 200 plots in illegal way and deprived the life savings of several members. The corruption of both the officials was proved in the preliminary probe of the FIA.

The administration of the Civilian Employees Cooperative Housing Society broke all the records of previous corruption and they committed an embezzlement of almost Rs 1.5 billion.

General Secretary Yasir Mehdi and Accountant Mansoor Sarwar are charged with selling four commercial plots for Rs 5.6 million, which was not deposited in the bank account of the society.

When Daily Times contacted the Environment Ministry on the sale of catchment of the River Sawan, they said that the grabbing of the river’s land could bring dangerous consequences as in case of flood, loss to life and property could take place on a larger scale.

When FIA started investigation of case No 11/2016, they came to know that there was a net of corruption spread in the housing society.

This scribe got the information through reliable sources that the accused Yasir Mehdi and Mansoor Sarwar had already secured interim bails.

It is an interesting feature that the president of the society had levelled the charges of corruption and gave proofs against the General Secretary to the registrar’s office, on which the case was registered. While Secretary Yasir Mehdi also provided a pile of evidences on which no action has been taken so far.

The sources in the FIA said all the elements involved in the corruption scam would be brought to justice so that the plundered money might be returned to the affected people.
