Sir: I am 52 years of age and resident of Gawalmandi, Lahore. I have been visiting Shaukat Khanum for the past seven months since I was diagnosed with Renal Cell Carcinoma. I was scared and lost but today after completing my treatment and getting cured from Shaukat Khanum totally free of cost, I find it my responsibility to share my experience. The level of care and cooperation I received regarding my disease despite the fact that I was a nonpaying patient was beyond my expectations. This hospital feels like a hub of peace where your pains and worries simply fly away. I believe there are two main phases faced by every individual patient at Shaukat Khanum Hospital. First phase is the hard one; where a patient and the attendants are told about the stressful procedure of cancer treatment and the high cost related to it. But then as soon as the Hospital registers a patient for his/her free treatment, all worries go away. It marks the beginning of the second phase in which the hospital staff practically holds your hand and takes you out of thick clouds of painful disease and the worries surrounding it. Cancer is a completely curable disease provided that a patient contacts the Hospital in time. Similarly, it is not a contagious disease and does not spread by physical contact with other people. The most satisfying point is that Shaukat Khanum hospital does not abandon its patients after treatment, but maintains their monthly checkups for free. I am so glad to know that an even bigger Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital is starting to be built for the people of Karachi. BINA NAZLEEN Lahore Published in Daily Times, February 21st 2019.
