Sir: The Supreme Court has rejected Bahria Town’s offer of Rs 405 billion. Even if the court had decided to accept Rs 405 billion (almost three billion dollars) payable over 12 years, the rupee will go on depreciating every year, so the government will get much less than it would if the entire amount were recovered immediately. Moreover, what about the Capital Value Tax and other taxes which were supposed to be paid when the land was given to Malik Riaz? Secondly, the same taxes should have been recovered when plots were sold to investors, and every time plots exchanged hands. At a very conservative estimate, the Federal and provincial/local taxes would amount to at least 400 billion rupees, if not more. The apex court should look into this aspect of the matter also.
