Police, on Wednesday arrested two employees of an eatery where two children died last month from a suspected case of food poisoning and registered a case against them. According to police, a case was registered against two employees of a restaurant under charges of ‘reason to murder’ and ‘destroying evidence. The police said that the employees were identified as Amir Akhtar and Irfan Aleem. Two siblings, 18-month-old Ahmed and Muhammad aged 5, died from a suspected case of food poisoning on November 11 when they went to dine out at a local restaurant with their mother. The police began investigation and sealed the eatery. Later on, Sindh Food Authority (SFA) shared that the restaurant had already been served an improvement notice two months ago. SFA director Abrar Sheikh told the media that the restaurant had been inspected two months ago and served an improvement notice with a checklist. “We did not issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the restaurant,” he said, adding that they did not ‘have a certificate or registration process in place earlier.’ He further said that the process to register the eateries across Sindh would begin from the end of this month. “The provincial assembly passed into law the Sindh Food Authority Act a few months ago and officers were also appointed recently,” he maintained.
