A technology park is being established in Lahore and within six months, four to five technology parks will be established across country, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Azam Khan Swati said on Tuesday while addressing the inaugural session of World Science Day celebrations at the Pakistan Science Foundation. UNESCO Pakistan Director Vibeke Jenson was the guest of honour on this occasion. Prof M Qasim Jan, President Pakistan Academy of Sciences, Prof Manzoor Hussain Soomro, President ECO Science Foundation, and Qaiser Majeed Malik, Chairman Pakistan Science Foundation, were also present. Heads of S&T organizations, eminent scientists, teachers and a large number of students attended the ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said, “Science and technology is in the minds of our young students and our leadership is committed to invest on human resource development. Overseas Pakistanis will support our government in science and technology development in Pakistan.” He said no country can make progress without science and technology, and expressed the resolve to achieve relevant targets within six months by reviving all science and technology organizations. The minister threw light on the importance of providing the benefits of science to every human being and improving the access to these benefits for a sustainable development in all the countries of the world. He also announced to celebrate ‘Science Week’ all over Pakistan. PSF Chairman Dr Qaiser Majeed Malik in his address highlighted the Foundation’s research and science popularization programmes. He said the World Science Day is celebrated all over the world on November 10 to create awareness on the importance of science and its use for peace and development. He said the purpose of celebrating the World Science Day for peace and development is to renew the national as well as the international commitments to science for peace and development and to stress the reasonable use of science for the benefit of the society as postulated by the World Conference on Science in Budapest in 1999. “Since 2002, PSF in collaboration with other organizations is organizing various activities for students and scientists to commemorate the day,” he added.
