KARACHI: The Government Degree Girls College, Orangi Town, has been facing multiple issues including security threats, lack of faculty members and basic facilities, Daily Times has learnt. The Education & Literacy Department has failed to provide complete faculty till now including non-teaching staff to the college since its inception in 2004. The commerce faculty has never held classes in last 3 years due to the absence of faculty members. In addition, there is no electricity, clean drinking water, and playground for students at the college. Interestingly, the so-called degree college has never held classes for degree students since its inception. The college management has now also rejected admissions to 250 commerce students. Official data reveals that there are only 10 teachers – six female and four male- at a college meant for 560 girl students. Ironically, the college has no English subject teacher since the first day. “Many posts are lying vacant as there is no sweeper at the college. The students and teachers clean the premises on a voluntarily basis. We have become now tired of sending reminders to the concern authorities”, Professor Khalida Parveen , the principal of the college told Daily Times. She revealed that she had also received threats sent by unknown persons through a letter and afterwards the case was registered with the nearby police station. But, the police have not arrested anybody till today, she added. Some unknown persons had burnt down the college’s official record as the education department had not provided us with a gatekeeper or security guards. If female teachers unwilling to join the college then male teachers should be appointed because 50 percent male teachers are allowed at girls colleges according to the education department rules, she suggested. Hanifullah Khan, a senior teacher at the college told that the education department has been divided into two sections – one deals with schools while the other with colleges- but it has not worked for us since the condition of schools and colleges are alike. A number of colleges are overstaffed while on the other hand some are understaffed, he said, this shows how capable the college education department is. The degree college is being run like a secondary school with no basic facilities for students as well as teachers. The situation has frustrated many girl students as they have quit the college without completing their studies, he concluded. It is pertinent to mention here that there is no degree college for girls in Orangi Town besides this one.
