Sir: International Widows Day is observed annually on June 23 to intensify awareness regarding the social injustice and extreme poverty confronted by widows and their children, and the plight of the millions of widows worldwide. On this day, Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba, inspiration for The Loomba Foundation, became a widow. According to its founder, Raj Loomba, 259 million widows and 585 million children around the world, along with their family members, face humongous hardships and obstacles after their husbands die and they aren’t looked after, such as by nongovernmental organizations and governments. In some cases they might even be shunned by society altogether. Millions of widows and their children worldwide suffer from extreme poverty, illiteracy, homelessness, violence, ostracism, lack of effective medical care, and discrimination in law and custom. Widows can be found on the streets trying to earn money for a living, while others choose to commit suicide, and there have also been cases of a few burning themselves with their dead husbands. They are forced to fight for their rights and are subjected to cruel violence. Now it is our turn to stand up, to put some of our contributions to help the widows around the world to tackle their problems. Let’s prove that “we are all cells of the same body of humanity”.
