SHIKARPUR: An elderly man was shot and killed by unknown armed assailants next to the premises of the district council office in the limits of New Faujdari police station here on Saturday. According to the police, the deceased was identified as Mumtaz Ali Abro, 55. The police said Abro was headed towards his home situated in Allahabad Colony when he was ambushed by armed assailants, riding on a motorcycle who opened indiscriminate firing on him. He sustained severe bullet wounds and was shifted to the Shikarpur Civil Hospital for medical examination, from there he was referred to Sukkur Hospital, owing to his precarious condition. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to Sukkur Hospital. Afterwards, a massive protest was held by relatives of the deceased and area residents. They kept the body at the Shikarpur-Larkana Indus Highway, blocking it for traffic for several hours. The blockade ended after a contingent of area police including New Faujdari and Stuart Ganj police reached the scene and assured the protesters that they would bring the killers to justice. Zahid Abro, a brother of the deceased, and other protesters demanded the high ups to take notice of the murder and threatened to expand the scope of their protest if timely action was not taken on the matter. The protesters said that the deceased had no rivalry with anyone and therefore personal enmity should not be seen as the motive behind the killing. Imam Bux Lashari, the SHO New Faujdari station, said that a police team was investigating the matter. The body was handed over to his relatives after a postmortem examination was conducted at the Civil Hospital in Shikarpur. The deceased had shifted to Shikarpur from his village, Dodo Detho near Garhi Yasin, around 35 years ago. Published in Daily Times, April 15th 2018.
