GHOTKI: A girl committed suicide by drinking poison in a town of Ubauro in Ghotki district of Sindh province on Saturday after refusal of being made “Vani” as a price of her brother’s decision to marry of his own will. She poisoned her parents as well, who are currently in critical condition and undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Karachi. The incident took place after jirga had decided that the girl has to marry someone from her brother’s in-laws. Furthermore, jirga ordered her brother to reimburse Rs1 million. The brother of deceased, Sarfaraz Sheikh and Aasia married on a mutual consent in court three months ago. “Feudal lord summoned a jirga following my marriage. Jirga asked me to pay Rs1 million and give my sister, Ruby, as Vani to Aasia’s relative,” Sheikh said. He said that despite of lodging a complaint with police, they have not taken any action as yet. However, Ubauro deputy superintendent of police (DSP) had taken notice of the incident and said that involved culprits would be held accountable as per the law.
