LAHORE: The two-day Asia-Pacific judicial conference on climate change came to an end on Tuesday as judges, lawyers and activists from across the region vowed to protect the environment. The conference which was attended by former Supreme Court chief justice Tasdeeq Hussain Jillani, judge Mansoor Ali Shah, Lahore High Court justice Ayesha Malik, justice Farrukh Irfan, justice Ali Bakir Najfi among other dignitaries discussed the implications of climate change in the region and the way forward. Speaking to the attendees, Justice Farrukh Irfan thanked local and foreign dignitaries for being part of the conference. He added that the two-day climate change event has produced fruitful results and has helped in understanding of climate change impacts better. He also commended the LHC saying that organisation of such a mega-event shows that LHC dignitaries and attendees of the conference are determined to eliminate climate related threats and promote environmental justice. Farrukh also emphasised on the role of young lawyers and youth of the country in tackling challenges related to climate change. He added that participation of young lawyers in the conference is a positive sign. Foreign dignitaries also paid visit to the LHC on invitation of the chief justice, where they were briefed about the historic importance of the LHC building. The guests also visited the court museum. United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Environment John Knox, Britain Supreme Court judge Lord Carnwath, judges from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Malaysia, China, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Nepal were among the foreign luminaries in the two-day conference.
