LAHORE: The Shahdara police have arrested a Christian teenager accused by a mob led by members of a barelvi extremist outfit of sharing sacrilegious content on social media. The mob gathered on GT Road and blocked it for traffic almost all day on Monday. It included activists of barelvi extremist outfit Labaik Ya Rasool Allah (LYRA). Dozens of people gathered on the road around noon and blocked it for traffic saying that they would disperse only when the suspect would be arrested and a case registered against him under Section 295-C of the Pakistan Penal Code. They said that the suspect had shared content on social media which they believed was sacrilegious. Soon senior police officers reached the site, along with a heavy contingent of police, to try and disperse the crowd. However, the numbers kept increasing as announcements were made from mosques in the area exhorting residents to join the demonstrators. The protesters later marched towards GT Road and burnt tyres to block it for traffic. City Division Operations SP Ali Raza told the media that negotiations between the protesters and the police continued till the evening. The protesters finally dispersed after the police team tracked down the suspect and registered a case against him. Published in Daily Times, February 21st 2018.
